Beyond being a spectacular ballet event, this January’s performance by the Dance Theatre of Harlem celebrates the life and legacy of jazz legend Hazel Scott. Hazel Scott’s fusion of classical and jazz styles, coupled with her fearless stance against segregation, left a lasting mark on American music and civil rights.
Curated in collaboration with Scott’s son, Adam Clayton Powell III, and biographer Karen Chilton, “Sounds of Hazel” aims to introduce a new generation to Scott’s extraordinary life. The piece, made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project, receives lead funding from the Doris Duke Foundation and the Mellon Foundation
In addition to the mesmerizing “Sounds of Hazel,” the January program features other captivating choreographies, including “Return” by Robert Garland, Tiffany Rea-Fisher’s “Sounds of Hazel,” and George Balanchine’s “Allegro Brilliante.” These performances promise to enthrall the audience with a rich canvas of dance forms and styles, showcasing the vibrant versatility and artistry of the Dance Theatre of Harlem.
