Definition Health is a startup that uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology to improve patients’ surgical experiences. It has identified Miami as a good base for future national expansion.
Addressing Patient Anxiety Over Surgeries
Although surgery is meant to save and improve a patient’s life, Dr. Sandeep Chauhan noticed early in his career that patients were prone to experiencing anxiety over an operation even before it began. What should they expect to happen, how could they prepare for the good or the bad, and what will happen when they leave the surgery room? Chauhan co-founded Definition Health to address his patients’ worries.
“It was born out of frustration as a surgeon trying to improve care,” Chauhan told Refresh Miami, explaining that patients were not appropriately engaged before and after surgery. “We wanted to put patients at the center of the journey and create a digital platform for the entire process.”
An AI-Powered Health Platform Making an Impact
Definition Health started in the United Kingdom, using an AI-powered platform to streamline the patient experience throughout the surgical process. The company has helped hospitals save millions of dollars and improve patient preparation to improve patients’ surgical experiences. Over 300,000 patients have used Definition Health’s service to enhance their surgery experience from has-op to post-op recovery.
Definition Health reports that the United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS) has saved nearly $650,000 per 10,000 patients, or almost $64.5 per patient, simply by reducing system inefficiencies. The company wants to apply its solution in the United States, starting with Miami.
We’ve had several conversations with key players in Miami,” Chauhan said. “Miami is the perfect base for us to expand throughout the US.”
Streamlining Operations With a Focus on the Patient
AI has significantly impacted the healthcare field by streamlining operations, but the Definition of Health is distinguished by how its system integrates patient care. Rather than focusing exclusively on the healthcare provider, the company takes a personable approach to helping patients prepare for surgery and receive proper attention during recovery, even outside of a medical establishment.
Definition Health refers to this solution as a “virtual ward.” With this technology, patients remain connected with their healthcare team outside the hospital through continuous monitoring. “Patients feel almost like VIPs because they know we’re monitoring them 24/7,” Chauhan said. Many of a patient’s concerns surround what comes after the surgery, so Definition Health’s “virtual ward” provides necessary peace of mind should any post-op complications arise.
Proven Results Spark American Interest
Definition Health’s business model is perfect for healthcare providers. It has been proven to reduce operating costs, decrease delays, and potentially generate revenue for healthcare institutions. The company’s system is licensed to providers who connect their patients to the service.
“We’ve had a huge amount of interest because the platform helps improve safety and care quality in ways that existing systems simply don’t,” Chauhan said, expressing how Definition Health’s system has garnered attention from hospitals in the United States. “Hospitals see the advantage of having one solution that covers the entire surgical journey, from patient intake to recovery.”
Moving Forward
Expansion into the United States lies in Definition Health’s immediate future, but Chauhan is also excited to see how the company’s AI will grow and improve. “We can [already] identify risk factors before surgery and intervene,” Chauhan said. The potential for scaling in the United States is massive, and Definition Health is already making over $2 million in annual recurring revenue. “There’s a huge appetite for pathway solutions like ours,” Chauhan stated, sharing that the company was preparing to build a team in Miami.
